Getting Ready to Leave
After check-in, we passed the time keeping an eye on our luggage and watching a man with a stick wash the viewing dome windows!
Medicine Lake
The next day, we drove up the canyon to Maligne Lake. This is actually Medicine Lake where we saw the grizzly family on the shore.
Icefield Parkway
The drive from Jasper to Banff is via the Parkway - a tourist road through the massive Jasper National Park. We drove half of it to visit the glaciers.
Outside Jasper
The devastation from the fires is very much evident and we were told it will take a generation to recover. In the background, you can see that the fires spread right up the mountains to the very tree ...
Town Square Jasper
All of Jasper is neat, tidy and very tranquil - at this time of year!
Main Street Jasper
Japer isn't much more than the main street and the railway line! Looks good though in the evening light.
The Athabasca Glacier
Spilling out of the Columbia Icefield are a number of glaciers. This was our transport to one of them and our guide Ben.
Looking up towards the icefield and the crevasses
Walking over its surface was quite surreal and there was a lot to explore: the different colours, the rapid flowing streams, the holes (!). There was 150m of ice under us.
